Model of the Month : Carine Calixte

June’s Model of the Month is here – and it’s Carine! This babe has worked with us through campaigns, runway shows, and capsule collections. Learn more about her below!

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?

I’m a mommy! I have two amazing sons, Micah and Zion, they keep me on my toes! I volunteer in my community. I’m a classically trained private chef. Right now I’m laser focused on having my curve modeling career take off!

2. How did you get involved with the brand?

My friend, Tatiana, told me about a SmartGlamour casting and I went for it!

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

I just love everything this brand stands for. Everyone can have a seat at the fashion table with SmartGlamour.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?

Body positivity is loving the skin you are in despite what society may think is “beautiful” or “acceptable.” It’s loving and appreciating your body and others freely and knowing your self worth. Body positivity is safe and judgement free.

5. If there is a message you could put across to other people through your modeling photos – what would that be?

I’m not your standard model, but that doesn’t mean I’m not as equally stunning as a “straight size” model. Beauty comes in all shapes, body types, skin tones and hair textures. I want to always represent that!

6. What is your advice to other people who would like to give modeling a try?

They need to know that it’s a constant grind/hustle. You need thick skin because this is a tough industry but don’t let that stop you! Take beautiful pictures, LOTS of them and build your portfolio.

Model of the Month : Alex Castro

We are a bit delayed with our May Model of the Month Feature – but only due to our own business schedule, because this babe is a gem. Alex has been modeling with SmartGlamour for a little over just one year, which seems ridiculous as she is such a strong pillar in the SmartGlamour modeling family! Learn a bit more about her below.

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?

• I’m an actor, model and theater producer. If you’re asking how I pay for food, rent, etc., then I’m a hotel Sales Manager. I’ve been in the hotel industry for the last 10 years all while hustling to make my dreams come true.

2. How did you get involved with the brand?

• Fellow model friend, Temiah, shared a casting post on Facebook and I truly thought it was a scam. Who actually casts ALL types of humans? Spoiler alert: SmartGlamour does.

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

• Aside from wanting to put on the beautiful clothes, I come back because of the positive messages SmartGlamour puts out into the world. I’ve never felt so empowered before SmartGlamour came into my life. Also, being surrounded by likeminded babes makes me feel we can all make a lasting, positive difference in fashion and the world.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?

• For me, body positivity means loving your body. It means ALL bodies are GOOD bodies. There is no wrong way to have a body. Period.

5. If there is a message you could put across to other people through your modeling photos – what would that be?

• My message would be that we, humans of color, people who don’t fit into the boxes of westernized beauty, exist. People of color have been under represented too long in print and media. We are here and will continue to fight for accurate representation as well as lift up our fellow humans who are marginalized.

6. What is your advice to other people who would like to give modeling a try?

• Do it. The only person holding you back from any opportunity is yourself.

Model of the Month – Tatiana Lewis

This month’s model feature is all about Tatiana Lewis. Tatiana is relatively new to the SmartGlamour family, joining in last Fall for our Fall 2016 Runway + Look Book. She also modeled in our Valentine’s Day look book. Learn more about her below!

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?

I have a background in Meeting and Event management. I have planned and coordinated numerous events and love the logistical aspect the most.

2. How did you get involved with the brand?

The brand had a big presence on social media and gained my attention with the tag words #FashionforAll. There wasn’t always fashion for all, especially when I was in High school, curvy girls were not the norm. Curvy girls like myself were shopping in the Women’s section and wearing unflattering clothes that were not particularly trendy. SmartGlamour has given many options to all women and I thank you.

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

SmartGlamour’s mission to be inclusive and I support a women entrepreneur 100%. I support Mallorie Dunn and her ability to continue to run a company on her own. The amount of support and love Mallorie has within the fashion community is amazing. Surrounding myself with like-minded and passionate individuals like many of the models keeps me coming back.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?

Body Positivity means self love and respect for all bodies. Its a journey for a lot of people to self love and to be less critical about their bodies and others. Once you find that confidence within you are unstoppable.

5. If there is a message you could put across to other people through your modeling photos – what would that be?

My message would be to enjoy life! I may be having a horrible day at times or going through something personally but I always remember to smile. That one smile in your photo could change someones day or transcend a warmth into their soul. A smile is contagious!

6. What is your advice to other people who would like to give modeling a try?

If modeling is your passion, do it! I moved from one city to another to follow my passion and pursuits within the industry. If your heart is not 100% into the hustle and drive it takes, I would find another avenue in the modeling industry or fashion world. One last thing! You will get many no’s and many yes’s but always remember to create your own opportunities! Love you mean it!

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do? I have been a middle school teacher…this is my 15th year! I am also a mother to two amazing boys, ages 5 and 8, and a wife to a great partner for almost 10 years.

2. How did you get involved with the brand? I am fortunate enough to know Mallorie (SG designer) from when she was a child. Her oldest sister and I have been best friends since the 7th grade. I saw she was looking for supporters from its infancy and was drawn to its message from the start. I was so excited about what she was doing to change a mindset that affected so many women! I invited her to come and speak to some of my students for career day a few years ago. I had to work myself up to being comfortable modeling.

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back? First of all, the clothes are amazing and make me feel amazing! My children were so excited to see a video of mommy as a model. I share my experiences with my students. I have a lot of fun with these amazing, confident, and diverse women I get to meet while modeling. It gives you a charge to help you go out and take on the world!

4. What does body positivity mean to you? Its knowing that I am not made wrong. Its sharing myself with the world on my own terms in a body that is special and mine. It is not thinking about what to improve, but how to embrace myself as much as I embrace other people’s beauty. Finding beauty all around me has never been a challenge. It is a lot more challenging continuing to see it in myself.

5. If there is a message you could put across to other people through your modeling photos – what would that be? I am a happy person who is a wonderful mix of many unique qualities yet may look like someone they know (maybe even themselves). Life is about enjoying it with people who you want to enjoy it with.

6. What is your advice to other people who would like to give modeling a try? Do it!!! I was very nervous about showing myself to the world (enter self doubt here). Once I did it though, I left feeling empowered. How often can you go into something and get so much out of it? The beautiful clothing is definitely a plus!

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?

Besides occasionally modeling for Smart Glamour, I am a full-time mommy of four. I am a professional Plus Size Model represented by Bicoastal Mgmt. I am the current Fit Model for Eloquii and Target Swimwear. I had previously been employed as a certified Foreign Language Teacher in the NYC school system. I am also a skilled makeup artist, although I am primarily working as a model now. I love to travel in my free time, sometimes I’m traveling now also for work!

2.How did you get involved with the brand?

I found the opportunity to work with Smart Glamour through a Modelmayhem.com post a few years back.

3.You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

I’ve modeled for Smart Glamour a few times and I really enjoy the positive energy of Mallorie and the other models.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?

Body positivity means that we appreciate the look and usefulness of our bodies, and help others appreciate theirs.

5. If there is a message you could put across to other women through your modeling photos – what would that be?

My message is : Be the YOU that YOU want to be! As a model a person must often change to attract different clients, but I think it’s also important to retain some of your uniqueness or else you get rather muddled down in a selection of people.

6. What is your advice to other women who would like to give modeling a try?

I think there are more opportunities in Modeling than people realize. A lot of people only focus on the Fashion aspect however there is so much more work, especially in Commercial Print, Promo Videos/ Web Content. Research all options and prepare! And don’t give up, so many are good enough, it’s just you have to stick to it.

Model of the Month: Lady Zombie

Next up in our Model of the Month Series is Lady Zombie!  Lady Z was in our very first “campaign” photoshoot – before we learned the importance of adding a hashtag and promoting our messages to publications! She then continued to come back and model for additional look books and runway shows. Let’s learn a little bit more about her!

LadyZWinter
1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?
I live a Selina Kyle/Catwoman sort of life. By day, I’m a white-collar sort, and by night, I am Lady Zombie – Entertainer Extraordinaire! Aside from modeling for both fashion and art, I get involved in many entertainment and subculture related things. I sing in a self-titled group called, “Lady Zombie and the Deviant Trust Project”. DJ Amazin A and I put out sexy, pissed-off, electronic, trip-hop, goth music. I choreograph and perform in live “Kink Art” stage shows. I’m a Dominatrix, professionally and personally. I also produce and host goth/fetish and rock themed events in the tri-state area. I write the New York Goth Culture Column for Examiner.com. Lastly, and most important of all, I am a proud mother to a beautiful, smart, curious, and funny, one year old baby girl, and wife to Ali Fangsmith – a bad ass fang maker and jewelry carver.

2. How did you get involved with the brand?
I love to pose when a concept inspires me. When I can truly become a character or simply express something within me to the camera is when I feel most satisfied. I enjoy wearing incredible outfits and costumes, and to showcase the designs of others. I’m a body positive enthusiast! My deep-rooted interests in the macabre, the Gothic culture and the S&M lifestyle often showcase in my work. I fell in love with idea of SmartGlamour because of the inclusivity that was immediately apparent in their very first look book. When a friend recommended I apply to a casting, I immediately did. I am so happy that I did, too. Mallorie’s vision is something to be inspired by and passionate about. Plus, the clothes are just so damned gorgeous. I can easily incorporate the looks into my alternative wardrobe.

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

The campaigns that SmartGlamour puts out make me feel excited, and I’m drawn to share the message with everyone I know! I was apart of the #MiracleMomBods campaign after having my daughter, for instance. It’s so important to showcase “the real” in fashion, and to represent all the difference amazing types of bodies and lifestyles out there – SmartGlamour achieves this. Also, the community that SmartGlamour has created is something that I am proud to be apart of… working with people of such diverse backgrounds, every shape, every size, identity, ability,… it’s incredible. Mallorie has an army of awesome behind her.
LadyZMMB
4. What does body positivity mean to you?
To me, body positivity is all about affirming a positive image of myself and this body that I am in, while not defining myself by my size and other people’s ideas of what a body should be. It’s about being good to myself. It’s about loving every part of myself, including every “flaw.” Additionally, I see body positivity as being able to embrace my scars, stretch marks, tattooed flesh, rolls and valleys, and seeing these things as parts of me, not as imperfections. My body is just an extension of the story of my life. It isn’t always easy to overcome conflict with my body. Some days, I wake up and feel fierce as hell. Some days, I don’t. Through body positivity, I aim to have more “fierce as hell” days, and to help other women, and people in general, to love themselves, too. I think fashion is a huge extension of body positivity, and I try not to put myself in a box and limit myself into any societal standards on how I should or should not dress. I dress to make myself happy. I dress to express my feelings and personal style.
5. If there is a message you could put across to other women through your modeling photos – what would that be?
I’m a black sheep among black sheep as a curvy, almost 30, latina, gothic woman. I can be all of these things, and still achieve success and happiness. I like that I am able to connect with and encourage people from a variety of walks-of-life to love themselves and feel less alone through my art, my writing, and my modeling. Through my photos, I want other women to feel strong and inspired.
LadyZSpring16
6. What is your advice to other women who would like to give modeling a try?
Work with brands and photographers whom you can identify with. Modeling is an art form, and it should make you feel good. Follow your instincts. Above all, have fun!

Model of the Month: Liz Richards

Next up in our Model of the Month Series is Liz Richards!  Liz has modeled for SmartGlamour for the #ImFlattered campaign and also our Winter/Holiday 2015 Look Book.  We asked her a few questions about her SmartGlamour experience.

Shot for Smart Glamour

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?
I’m a stage and event manager, and a theater podcaster and blogger!

2. How did you get involved with the brand?

I knew Ian (SmartGlamour Designer Mallorie Dunn’s husband) since we worked together on a play entitled Balm in Gilead in 2010, and when he started posting about what his amazing now-wife was working on I was anxious to get involved. I went to one of the SmartGlamour fashion week shows and was so in love with not just the brand but the enthusiasm of the models and the audience. Everyone was having a great time!

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?
I know that as a petite white woman, my body type is already represented a lot in the media, so I wanted to support but not necessarily become a face. But then a modeling opportunity came up and I was thrilled to be asked. I love supporting a female-led small business based in New York, and the shoots are always a blast. It’s a lot of fun to be in the room with so many accomplished and confident women.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?
It’s embracing who you are at that very moment. I have good days and bad days with how I feel about how I look, but body positivity to me means that even on the bad days, I can appreciate all the things my body can do.
5. You were a part of our #ImFlattered Campaign that went viral in early 2016 – where you showed off a scar on your back that others have told you to hide – what was that experience like for you – and what was it like being one of the faces of a viral campaign?
I was pretty nervous to do #ImFlattered- not just because I was showing a part of my body I’ve been explicitly told to cover up, but because I didn’t feel like it was “enough.” My scoliosis and the spinal fusion in my back is sort of an invisible disability that I don’t like to draw much attention to. And here I was putting it under a spotlight! But the shoot itself was a lot of fun- the other women were so confident it was contagious. And after it came out, I did what you’re not supposed to do and I read ALLLLLLL the comments. I had people reach out to me on Facebook and Instagram who also have scars they try to cover up, and how happy they were to see that acknowledged in a campaign for body positivity. That made it all worth it.

6. If there is a message you could put across to other women through your modeling photos – what would that be?
Confident women are attractive. If you’re confident in who you are, you’ll attract the people who want to be around that, and the people who can’t handle that won’t bother you anyway.
7. What is your advice to other women who would like to give modeling a try?
Imagine how a younger version of you would feel seeing someone like you as a model. Your putting yourself out there could inspire the next generation, and that’s a great world to be in.

1. Aside from occasionally modeling for SmartGlamour – what do you do?

I’m a freelance copywriter + event professional dedicated to helping my fellow creative geniuses to tell authentic + engaging brand stories.

2. How did you get involved with the brand?

I met a friend of Mallorie’s at a charity event I volunteered for – The Girls Write Now Awards ceremony. Mallorie featured me as her SG woman of the week, and shortly thereafter I helped her bring the #MeasureMeBeautiful campaign and event series to fruition. It’s been a love love relationship ever since.

3. You’ve modeled for us multiple times – what makes you continue to come back?

I come back to SmartGlamour because it’s real in a way that very few businesses and people are anymore. Mallorie has placed equality at the heart of her business. She lives that. There’s not a racist, ableist, sexist, or transphobic bone in her body. She puts her message into every stitch of clothing. And that outpouring of love is at every single shoot.

4. What does body positivity mean to you?

Body positivity is not, or should not be this radical stance. It is really just the message that there is no reason not to love yourself. There is no reason to deny yourself love or fashion or beauty or anything because of the numbers on a scale or piece of measuring tape. Your beauty comes from your principles and the confidence with which you live by them.

Bethany

5. If there is a message you could put across to other women through your modeling photos – what would that be?

That I don’t need your permission to be a badass bundle of brown skinned beauty. I don’t want it. My beauty doesn’t need permission. Neither does yours.

6.  What is your advice to other women who would like to give modeling a try?

Apply at SmartGlamour!
