We live in a society where women’s bodies are obsessed over, objectified, scrutinized. Our bodies are held to an un-achievable (sans 5% of us) standard which forgets the fact that bodies change, grow, and age. We live in a society where #DadBod became an overnight sensation – celebrating men for depicting the average, everyday version of themselves – when that is the last thing we would accept women to be.

Where is the celebration for Mom Bods? The bodies that actually have reason to grow and change – as they grew a life inside of them and then gave that life to the world. Instead – we have front page headlines and gold stars for celebrity women who have won the ultimate prize of “getting their pre-baby body back!”

Where is the realization that Moms are more than just their bodies and their motherhood – but still women and individuals with their own style, personalities, accomplishments, and dreams? When will we start telling women that they are so much more than their bodies – no matter what state that body is in?

Kerry Washington recently stated in an interview – ‘You know what? I try really hard not to use that language, because it’s not about going backward in life,’” she told the magazine.

“I’ve been really focused on not being ‘back’ to anything, but being the best version of myself right now,” Kerry continued. “My body is the site of a miracle now. I don’t want to be pre-miracle.”

We could not agree more. While women absolutely have every right to do whatever they want or need with their bodies to feel happy and healthy on their own terms – the pressure towards what that happiness and health needs to look like on the outside is the dangerous element in the equation.
