Designer Spotlight

One of the worst things about mass market fashion here in the United States is the working conditions found at the overseas factories which produce our clothing. Mass market clothes are cheap and easy to find – and because of this – the most popular. I must admit that a very large percentage of my clothing can be traced back to Forever 21 and the like – but I wish that wasn’t the case.

Unfortunately – most fair trade or American made clothing is just too expensive for me to afford. Until now! Welcome MataTraders. Thank you to Jezbel for doing the work of finding this gem for me. The prints used are all handmade block printing and the embroidery is hand done as well. They boast no factory production on their website. My favorite part of their story comes in here:

“Our mission is to work with organizations that educate, employ, and empower women. Spending time with these groups has helped us realize that even the most traditional women, when given the opportunity, thrive in a sphere of meaningful work that is outside their homes and families. We have also learned that equality in the workplace IS possible in a country as socially stratified as India.  Whether a beginner sewer or the marketing director, all the women that make our clothing and accessories have a voice.”

Fabulous.

And so are the clothes!
